Hey there cuties,
Did you know that people who speak multiple languages develop different personalities? And do you know that each languages operates their on little section in the brain of that person? Well now you know and let me tell you - these are not just statement, these are facts.
I am a Bulgarian, and Bulgarian language is my mother tongue... but I love the English language immensely and have dedicated a large portion of my life studying it. I have never thought about how much a language shapes you, changes you ... the way you speak, your gestures while talking, your personality even...
That is until I found a wonderful article about how "managing" different languages changes you thought process and as a result shapes different personalities within you. That really got me thinking "I'm a a different person when I'm speaking English?" To my surprise the answer was "Yes" and "No" at the same time. How you ask? Let me tell you ;)
After a closer look I realize that Bulgarian is the language I communicate most in and there for the supreme one. My base is Bulgarian and more or less whenever I see or hear something in a different language it goes back to my base for meaning.
I love writing in Bulgarian because I know so many fancy sounding words and can use them well, but at the same time I feel a little trapped with it. I find it hard to express my creative side in it. I use the Bulgarian language to communicate, but for the most part I use English to research. And with time I have found that even my writing styles are different, depending on the language.
English is my second language and for the most part of my life it has served just that - a second position. Whenever I heart something in English my mind had to covert it in Bulgarian. That on it's own is a mind gymnastics ;)
Later in my life the English language started living a life on its own and I stopped using the Bulgarian as a bridge.
I have notices that whenever I need an inspiration for something I use English. I type in Google in English, I read articles in English, I watch video is English .... and I even take notes in English. My brain has developed to connect certain activities or interest with this language. I feel more free and I actually look more confident whilst speaking English. I'm more communicative and out-going using English, which blows my mind .. really.
In time I realized that I'm who I am because my bilingualism. English has helped me become more confident in Bulgarian as well, but unfortunately has ruined a bit of my Bulgarian vocabulary with so may foreign words that we use constantly nowadays. I truly believe that it is more than helpful and useful, especially in this day and age, to know and use more than one language... this is going to enrich you as a person, as a mind and is going to show you more of what the world has to offer!
If you're bi- or multilingual I entourage you to research the "Bilingual mind" - There are multiple articles and books on the matter and all are fascinating!
Also let me know if you want me to translate this article in Bulgarian, so it can get to more people :*
Love you, thank you and till next time <3 Aleks
